Madame Bovary

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

This was a good book. It was a twisting and turning novel that was a joy to read. It was also a cautionary tale of wanting too much and of living beyond your means.

This book left to to contemplate so many things. A huge question immediately brought forward is of chance. Madame Bovary was born in a certain place and time that she felt limited her happiness. The directions you can go from here asking more ‘What if’ questions is endless.

Another question is how she chose to handle the closing in circumstances. I admit if the path chosen was different the book would have to go on quite a bit more.

I must say that her situation in regard to being the one to handle finances was unique as I believe generally the men are in charge of the money. Actually thinking about this more, this makes a good story because if the roles were switched and he did these things, it would not be as interesting, it might be seen as everyday. So from this I am gathering that a shared financial responsibility would have been best.

I would recommend this book.

This is one of the books in Daria’s Reading List that I’m working on getting through.
